Solar & Battery for IID Customers

Imperial Irrigation District (IID) is a public electric utility with its own Net Billing rules, lower per-kWh base rates than SCE, and some of the heaviest summer air-conditioning loads in California. Here is how IID bills solar homes in 2026 — and how we engineer solar + Tesla Powerwall 3 systems that crush summer desert bills.

How IID bills you in 2026

Why Coachella Valley IID solar design is different from SCE

Drive across Washington Street from Palm Desert into La Quinta or Indio and your electric utility changes from Southern California Edison (SCE) to Imperial Irrigation District (IID). Three realities define an IID solar project.

Lower per-kWh base rate — huge desert kWh volume

IID's residential Schedule D base energy rate plus Energy Cost Adjustment (ECA) is lower per kilowatt-hour than SCE's 4–9 PM TOU rates next door in Palm Springs. However, 115°F+ summers in La Quinta and Indio routinely push single-family usage past 2,500–4,000 kWh/month, creating $400–$800+ summer electric bills.

IID Net Billing (not retail 1-to-1 NEM)

IID closed its legacy 1-to-1 Net Energy Metering tariff years ago and operates its own Net Billing program. Solar energy you use immediately in your home (or store in a battery for the evening) offsets 100% of IID's retail rate + ECA, while surplus kWh exported to the grid receive IID's lower wholesale export credit.

High-heat derating & AC compressor surges

Eastern Coachella Valley roofs experience some of the highest solar irradiance and ambient roof temperatures in North America. Proper desert system design requires low-temperature-coefficient modules (such as REC Alpha Pure-RX or Qcells G20/G10+) and liquid-cooled LFP batteries rated for 115°F+ summer operation.

Savings and ROI figures are owner-provided projections that assume average utility rates escalating ~5% annually. Estimates only — individual results vary; not a guarantee.

Self-consumption + desert backup

How solar + Tesla Powerwall 3 works on IID Net Billing

Because IID Net Billing values self-consumed solar higher than exported grid power — and desert evenings stay above 95°F — sizing your array and battery together is the key to eliminating summer bill spikes.

  • Daytime solar runs your AC condensers live. From 9 AM to 5 PM, your rooftop array feeds your home's multi-ton air conditioning and pool equipment directly, avoiding IID retail imports during the hottest hours of the day.

  • Bank midday surplus for 5 PM–midnight cooling. Instead of exporting midday surplus to IID at wholesale Net Billing rates, a Tesla Powerwall 3 (13.5 kWh usable, expandable to 27–54 kWh) stores that energy and discharges it after sunset so your evening AC runs on your own solar.

  • Protection against desert wind & monsoon outages. When summer monsoons or high winds knock down Coachella Valley distribution lines, Powerwall 3's 11.5 kW continuous output and 185 A motor-start rating keep your AC, refrigerators, and Wi-Fi running seamlessly.

Two agencies, one in-house team

Coachella Valley city permits and IID interconnection, handled together

In La Quinta, Indio, and Coachella, your building permit and your IID Customer Generation approval run through separate offices. We manage both from engineering to Permission to Operate.

La Quinta, Indio & Coachella city permits

Each Coachella Valley city enforces specific HOA architectural, tile-roof flashing, and UL 9540A battery placement rules. Our in-house permitting team submits directly to La Quinta, Indio, Coachella, Palm Desert, and Riverside County PLUS.

IID Customer Generation interconnection

IID requires a pre-approval interconnection packet, accessible AC disconnect/metering compliance, and transformer capacity verification before installation. We manage the entire IID Customer Generation portal submission.

City inspection + IID field sign-off to PTO

After our in-house crews complete the installation and pass the municipal building inspection, we coordinate IID's final meter inspection and secure written Permission to Operate (PTO).

Coachella Valley communities we serve: La Quinta, Indio, Palm Desert, Palm Springs, plus Coachella, Rancho Mirage, Cathedral City, Indian Wells, and Bermuda Dunes. Need service or a battery retrofit on an existing desert system? Visit our Renova Energy & SunPower Coachella Valley service page.

IID customer FAQ

Common questions from Imperial Irrigation District homeowners

No. CPUC NEM 3.0 applies only to California's investor-owned utilities (SCE, SDG&E, and PG&E). Imperial Irrigation District is a public irrigation and electric district governed by its own Board of Directors, and it operates an independent Net Billing tariff across La Quinta, Indio, Coachella, Bermuda Dunes, Thousand Palms, and Imperial County. Under IID Net Billing, electricity your home consumes directly from your solar panels or battery avoids IID's full retail rate (Schedule D plus Energy Cost Adjustment), while excess electricity exported back to the grid is credited at IID's published wholesale export compensation rate.

The Coachella Valley splits between IID in the east and SCE in the west. La Quinta, Indio, Coachella, Thermal, Mecca, and Bermuda Dunes are served by Imperial Irrigation District (IID). Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Desert Hot Springs, and most of Indian Wells are served by Southern California Edison (SCE), while Palm Desert splits along Washington Street / Hovley Lane (mostly SCE west of Washington, IID in eastern pockets). We verify your exact utility meter and rate schedule on every quote.

For most Coachella Valley homes on IID, pairing a battery like Tesla Powerwall 3 (13.5 kWh usable, 11.5 kW continuous output) with rooftop solar improves both monthly savings and outage resilience. Because IID's Net Billing credits exported kilowatt-hours below the retail rate you pay to import power — and desert air conditioners keep running through 95°F–105°F evenings long after the sun sets behind the San Jacinto Mountains — storing your midday solar in a battery lets you self-consume your own generation overnight instead of selling it cheap at noon and buying retail power after dark.

OC Solar handles both pipelines end-to-end with in-house teams. Your project requires a city or county building and electrical permit (City of La Quinta, City of Indio, City of Coachella, or Riverside County PLUS) plus an interconnection application and production meter/disconnect review through IID Customer Generation. Our team engineers the heat-derated single-line diagram, pulls the city permit, installs the system with in-house B, C-10 & C-39 crews, passes city and IID field inspections, and secures final IID Permission to Operate (PTO).

The federal residential tax credit (IRC §25D) for homeowner cash and loan purchases expired on December 31, 2025. In 2026, IID homeowners can still capture the ~30% federal commercial tax credit (IRC §48E) pass-through via our Prepaid Solar Plan or a low-rate Lease/PPA where the commercial financing partner owns the system and builds the tax credit directly into your lower upfront or monthly cost. Income-qualified IID households may also check IID's REAP (Residential Energy Assistance Program) and tree/efficiency offerings.
