Choosing equipment in Orange County
How OC Solar selects the equipment we install
OC Solar installs Tier-1 solar panels — Q CELLS Q.TRON BLK M-G2+ (up to 440 W), REC Alpha Pure-RX (up to 470 W), and Tesla's TSP-420 — paired with Tesla Powerwall 3, Enphase IQ, or SolarEdge storage, on homes across Orange County and Southern California. Since 2016 we've installed 30+ megawatts of solar, and the equipment list stays short on purpose: every product we quote has to earn its place on a hot Southern California roof for 25 years.
The selection process
We vet equipment across the same categories our preferred-brands program tracks — solar modules, inverters & energy controls, solar mounting, energy storage, design software, distribution. A panel or battery makes the list only when the manufacturer's warranty terms, published specs, and supply channels all check out: long-term product and performance coverage, a temperature coefficient that holds output through SoCal heat, and availability through multiple established distributors so one supply hiccup can't stall your install. The exact equipment for your home is specified in your signed proposal — and any substitution gets reviewed and documented before installation.

Q CELLS Q.TRON BLK M-G2+ (up to 440 W, 22.5% efficiency, N-type TOPCon) is the value-for-performance pick for most homes. REC Alpha Pure-RX (up to 470 W, 22.6%, lead-free HJT cells) costs more but delivers the highest output per panel and a rare ProTrust 25/25/25 warranty that covers labor — worth it on tight roofs where every watt counts. Tesla's TSP-420 (420 W, ≥ 20.5%) trades a few watts for the sleekest low-profile look. All three carry 25-year warranties; the choice comes down to roof space, budget, and aesthetics.
Compare panel specsPowerwall 3 or Enphase: which battery fits
Tesla Powerwall 3 (13.5 kWh usable, 11.5 kW continuous, integrated solar inverter) is the fit for whole-home backup and new solar-plus-battery projects — one unit handles solar conversion, storage, and outage protection, with Storm Watch auto-charging ahead of grid events. Enphase IQ Battery 10C (10 kWh, 7.08 kW continuous, AC-coupled) is the fit when you're adding storage to an existing system or want per-panel microinverter monitoring with no single point of failure. We install both — OC Solar is a Tesla Powerwall Premier Certified installer — so the recommendation follows your home's loads, not a quota.
Explore battery storageEquipment questions, answered
- What solar panels does OC Solar install in Orange County?
- Q CELLS Q.TRON BLK M-G2+ (up to 440 W), REC Alpha Pure-RX (up to 470 W), and Tesla TSP-420 (420 W) panels — all black, all with 25-year warranties. Your proposal specifies the exact model for your roof, and substitutions are reviewed and documented before installation.
- Should I choose Tesla Powerwall 3 or an Enphase battery?
- Powerwall 3 fits whole-home backup and new solar-plus-storage builds: 13.5 kWh usable, 11.5 kW continuous, with the solar inverter built in. Enphase IQ Battery 10C fits homes adding storage to existing solar or wanting per-panel monitoring: 10 kWh, 7.08 kW continuous, AC-coupled. We design with both and recommend based on your usage, panel setup, and backup priorities.
- How long does a solar installation take in Orange County?
- Our median is 30 days from signed contract to installation, and 60 days from signing to permission to operate (PTO) from your utility. The rooftop work itself typically takes one to two days; the rest is permitting, inspection, and utility approval, which we manage end to end.
- How does OC Solar decide which equipment goes on my roof?
- Design first, then hardware: we model your roof geometry, shading, and electrical usage, then match equipment to the design — higher-output REC panels for tight roofs, Q CELLS for balanced value, microinverters for shaded or complex roofs, Powerwall 3 where whole-home backup matters. The final equipment schedule is written into your signed proposal.
